Lexicon MC 12 & Microphones?

I am looking for any experiences other MC12 owners might have in using different mic's than the ones Lexicon sales for auto calibration. I simply cannot justify their amazingly high cost, and my local dealer(s) do not have a set I can borrow/rent *
So am thinking about buying a decent set of mic's with appropriate connectors. Anyone else tried this?

btw Lexicon, how about a rental program?
