"So the bottom line is this--don't worry about HDTV for now. It will continue to evolve over the next few years and it will be whatever it will be. Who cares? The unfortunate thing is that people are sitting on the sidelines waiting for HDTV to get serious, and they are missing out on EDTV, which is the biggest advance in video quality since color TV.The real reason to step up to the latest video systems is not HDTV, but EDTV, or more simply 480p"
This article was written 10/03, and I don't know what the author thinks now, but the above statement could not be more wrong.
HDTV is here NOW. In July, 2004, there are enough HDTV programming to watch, and there's no reason to wait and wait. Various satelite and cable companies are offering up HDTV packages. While these packages are usually only 5-7 channels (Discovery HD, HDNet, HDNMV, HBO HD, SHO HD, ESPN HD), most big markets have plenty of HD material that is broadcast free over the air via OTA digital antenna($50-60).
For example, in Los Angeles, one can receive every single analogue channel in digital channel also. All digital channels are capable of broadcasting in HD, and they are doing exactly so more and more by the day. Many, maybe even most, prime time big-name shows are broadcasting in HD now. I've noticed significant increase in HD programming, at least during prime time, even in the past few months. Just flipping through channels during prime time these days, I would say I end up watching HDTV 50% of the time.
The danger of continuing to wait is all the wonderful programming you would have missed by the time you DO decide to get HDTV. The last superbowl, Academy awards, NBA finals, upcoming Olympics, etc to mention a few.
Also, I'd like to mention how badly 480p (DVD) STINKS compared to true HD. There is no comparison. I enjoy DVD's by upconverting them to 1080i via DVI only. Even then, it's not as breathtaking as true HDTV.
