i've finally got my ht system together using a 5 channel setup with discrete amps. but i am using a technics sh-ac500d for ht processing (dolby surround, dts). i am wondering how much, if any, sound quality in ht only i am missing when i see ht processors retailing in the $1000's and beyond. the technics does NOT have am/fm or an analoge pre-amp. the great advantage of this set-up is that the technics is completely by-passed in audio mode. the dis-advantage is that i must re-adjust volume on 2-ch amp between music and ht. i could eliminate this by connecting so it uses the technics "by-pass" mode but i have found a slight loss in audio guality - it requires signal to pass thru technics and 2 sets of ic's. i guess another way of asking my question is, is the ht processing of expensive ht processors much better or is the cost of these processor because of high quality integrated am/fm and analoge pre-amps???
