LFE level with passive sub and power amp

Fellow inmates.

I'm building a passive subwoofer around the NHT 1259 woofer. Right now I have a simple two channel setup with the TV and an NHT active crossover/amp to feed the subwoofer.

However, going forward I will likely get a video reciever ( probably a Sony ES) to create a true surround sound system. Will the receiver be capable of setting the LFE / bass output/volume independent of the other channels?

The reason I ask is that if the receiver does have capabilities to set the LFE output level then I can use a simple mono amp that will take the signal from the back of the receiver and feed the sub and use the current crossover/amp in another application.

Thanks for the help.

Phil
