Re: LCD VS. Plasma

4.15.7.150

By LCD, I assume you aren't referring to rear-projection LCD.

But from reading threads (note esp. www.avsforum.com threads), in general, LCDs are smaller than plasma. But the gap is decreasing. Samsung now has a 40" LCD (go see it at Best Buy). OTOH, plasma are as large as 63", and I think the smallest plasma is about 37" (maybe 32").

LCD struggle with having deep, dark blacks. Blacks aren't a problem for plasmas--in particular, Panasonic plasmas have very good blacks.

LCDs are lighter, consume less energy. Conversely, plasmas are heavier, consume more energy.

There is a lot of misinformation about plasma TVs. Yes, it is possible to get burn in, but not if you take basic precautions. Secondly, you probably won't burn out a plasma unless you watch it for 8 hours a day for 10 years. Nobody watches TV like that--unless, of course, they are unemployed, which means they can't afford either LCD or plasma . . .

If you read threads over at avsforum.com, you will see that many posters are plasma owners and quite satisfied.

regards, townsend
