Ironic that you stated this as this is what I'm contemplating (I have already bought the amps the pre-pro is the killer). The great thing about the Outlaw is that it has a 5-way cross-over (80-90-100-110-120hz) if you use sub/sats but I wonder if you use towers if you would be better off with something else. I have heard the HK5800 and was not really to impressed (seemed congested on a set of Nhts) so I went on the used market and got the following amps:AudioSource 5.1 paid $80 which included shipping (used)
AudioSource Amp1 paid $199 which included shipping (new spidergear.com)
Adcom GFA 535 paid $150 which included shipping (used at Yahoo auction)My local dealer is offering the HK5800 for $700 (display model) so I know this is not grey, refurb, or B stock and was wondering with all the low prices (JandR) how good of a quality item this really is. The cosmetics and build appears to be excellent but I thought the performance wasn't up to par (system involved monster THX cables/interconnects, Nht SuperOnes front, Nht SuperCenter, Nht rears {dipoles, can't remember the model}, and Nht sub1 on an HK DD preamp). I used a laser pointer (adjust toe-in), DVD Essentials (balance speakers at listening level), RS SPL meter, and an IASCA test disc (to help adjust cross-over of the sub and play some familiar tracks for tonality) to calibrate the system and for source I used a Wilson Audio Magnum Opus (separation of the pipes were hard to tell 3 out of 5), Dusk til Dawn DVD (clean dialogue at the beginning convience store shoot-out 5 out of 5), and Saving Private Ryan (chap 2-4 great detail and good thudding of mg 4 out of 5). The only problem I had with the HK is for music but for movies it was better than most AVRs under a $1000.
