S-Video worse than Composite?

199.68.77.225

I was pretty surprised, but when I hooked up my TV with an S-Video cable, the picutre quality got better in some respects, but overall is worse!

I'm using a Pioneer DV-606D and a 20" Sony with the "blacker" tube (about 4 years old). Previously, I had been using a pretty decent digital cable for a video cable on standard RCA connection. Recently picked up a good (Phoenix Gold) cable from a friend who does custom install. I know there are better S Video cables out there, but this one is pretty good.

There is a tremendous increase in digital hash and noise with the S Video. For instance, on The Matrix, the black background has all kinds of movement and noise in it. The lines between images are less sharp, and in fast motion sequences, the transitions are less than ideal.

However, the colors are much better, and the contrast is deeper. So, there are things I like better, but overall I prefer the standard composite.

Also, the image is much brighter, so I have to turn down the "Chroma" setting on the DVD player to get it closer to the composite and what I recall from the movie.

Any ideas? I haven't had a chance to try the set up with a different TV, but am thinking there could be something wrong with the S Video input (this is the first time I've used it).

Thanks for your help.

Kelly
