Excluding projectors and monitors, most video is output in 3 configurations. Composite, the typical plain vanilla coax connection from your cable company or vcr; S-video, which divides the luminence and color info (if I remember that correctly); and finally component video which divides up the color spectrum between 3 seperate cables. Component video is recognized as the highest performance output, but is useless if your dvd player and tv do not have component video capabilities. Composite and component are similar words and are many times confused (justifiably) but are completely different and incompatible.
