A naive question? What happens when a DD disc is processed by a pro logic decoder?

I'm still attempting to understand what is involved in all this surround decoding. Are movies encoded with DD also encoded with pro logic or are they completely incompatable?
As I understand it the stereo signal is much the same on both (correct?) but the surround is otherwise completely different.
Someone point me to an article please.
