While at first I thought it would lead to worse sound, putting the center speaker under my TV turned out to give better sound.Perhaps part of this relates to being closer to reflective surfaces on both sides (vertically), but part of it also was psychoacoustical as I felt the voices melded with the moving mouths better from this position. Go figure.
Try both ways -- moving speakers around is the cheapest tweak you'll find.
