Why is D-VHS dissapearing?

When I first started considering sattelite (Dish network), I was very interested in the JVC D VHS VCR. Now I see that it is being discontinued, and instead the dish manufactureres are pushing Tivo instead.
Any ideas as to why this is?
Is it specifically to keep you from making long lasting recordings of programs?
Tivo is far less useful (being non-portable, finite storage, etc.) than a DVCR- so why phase it out?
