I have not tried out all possible brands but Panasonic have a top quality tuner - fundamentally important, and we have more than one. They are the best we have tried. A relative had a JVC and it proved unreliable and I have the impression this is not isolated. I could never coax a good picture out of a Mitsubitchi (?) and our Sharp did not live up to its name.On s-vhs I would think about it carefully. We have two of them but rarely record in this mode - the original signal quality rarely justifies it, it makes tapes incompatible and they are lot more expensive without necessarily giving a much better picture than standard high quality tapes.
