Help w/picture adjust

I've had my 34" 16:9 directview TV a couple months now, and there's only one complaint I have: dark areas of the picture lose detail. Of course I've tried turning up the brightness, adjusting the color, etc., etc., with some success but I'm still not satisfied. Any tips on bringing details out of the dark areas? Would better cables or a power conditioner help? Thanks, Eric
