HA HA HA... I can relate to your situation. The one thing that your right about is that your TV will pretty much run for a LOT longer than you want it. The Mitsu big screens have an excellent reliability record. While some of the other suggestions are quite good ( unplugging, magnets, etc..), she might catch on or call in a repairman while your at work. This would end up costing you money in the long run and NOT getting a new tv out of it. A step backwards.
Offering to sell it and pay for the difference makes sense, but used big screens typically don't bring in much cash. You'd still be looking at spending a good chunk of change and that is probably what she wants to avoid.
Here's a solution that i almost cringe about telling someone. It just seems a shame to have to resort to doing something like this.
Find a high voltage "stun gun" or "cattle prod". Apply this to the antenna jack via a very short piece of coax that you've partially stripped and seperated the center from the shield. You will have permanent damage that will probably blow out the front end of the tuner. I would suggest unplugging it from the wall and anything else that you might have hooked up to the TV before you do this though. Should she insist on having a repairman look at it, it will look like a high voltage blast from nearby lightning. This would take the heat off of you, as she wouldn't expect anything funny. If she still won't let you get a new one, put the stun gun / cattle prod to some REAL use.... : ) Sean
