All inputs a/v combined that you have on receiver you should use to hook up the corresponding equipment. VCR to video/VCR, DVD to LaserDisc/DVD/TV/or what ever. Now you hook up a TV video in to the monitor out(or whatever) on the receiver.
You don't go from receiver's audio to TV audio input nor you go from TV audio out to any of receiver's input. So to the TV it will go only one cable for monitor out from the receiver. No audio cables to or from TV is needed, and no sound from TV neither.
Do not use Video out on VCR section on the receiver. This video out will cut off when VCR is selected on the receiver. Use this a/v out to connect to VCR a/v in, so you can tape a DVDs that are not protected.
This is basic connection that gives very good results. Now for RGB-Y, optical, digital, S-video and so on... this will get tricky. And not all of your equipment will have all this inputs, so it will make some things incompatible. This can piss you off when you realise that you can not use this connections because your TV doesn't have one or your VCR, so you will need to switch the cables in the back sometimes.Don't worry they know how to make money on you, you will be buying all new equipment in 2 years, even if your old one works just perfect.
You should not buy DVD, now you will need a 16:9 TV too. Or you will like myself have DVD and still watch tapes only and use DVD for a CD player. Quite expensive CD player but that's all you can use it for.Don't forget on 2005 they all go to digital. That means another TV again, and everything else that goes with it, like PlayStation, VCR, Camcoder. Everything, my friend. Just about $15000-20000 get ready to pay in 2005. No escape from this Evil!!!
