Try a metal cupcake pan (if you can stand the aesthetics, or lack thereof). Really.

I used to have my unshielded subwoofer placed near the TV and had the same problem. I entertained my wife's suggestion, at her persistence, and I'll be dipped if it didn't work! I'd bet it has something to do with the geometry, as opposed to just a flat sheet of metal.

Incidentally, I have a new cabinet for the subwoofer, in which the driver is firing down (straight at you before), and I don't have the problem anymore. I suppose the magnetic field from the driver is now perpendicular to the TV field.
