Seperate amp for mains

12.37.14.229

Unfortunately my tube amp is a little to short on power. I'd say around 25W/ch. I use 6L6GC's in a push-pull configuration.

I've gotten a few suggestions similar to yours. The most common is to buy a A/V receiver for around $800 and take the difference and buy a power amp for the mains. Hook the power amp up to the receiver via the pre-outs.

Any problems with letting an amp sit idle? I assume not since they provide pre-outs. Also, if I use the receiver to drive my mains, do the receivers typically have a main in. See, my subs are matched to the mains using an active crossover. I would go pre-out -> active xover -> hi-pass to main-in -> low-pass to my subs power amp (Perreaux 2150b) -> stereo subs. Therefore, I would also not need the sub out of the receiver. Any problems with this?

Thanks for your advice!

Mick
