There are no dumb questions, just the ones that aren't (and should have been) asked. Anyway, most 5.1 channel inputs on receivers go to the volume control. How many amps have volume controls? Not too many. There are also a few 5.1 processors (not receivers) that have a through-put and allow the analog signal to just "pass through" unchanged. However, it's understood that the output from the through-put will go to some sort of volume control. Hope this helps.
