denon avr-3300 pro logic/dd/dts problems

to all,
i have followed the directions in the denon manual and i can't the 3300 to function properly. i have an optical 1 connection and my dvd is set to this connection. i play braveheart and it will only play pro logic even though it says it has dolby digital 5.1. i set the signal received to "auto" and i get only pro logic as a choice. i play u-571 set to auto and i get dolby prologic. no dolby digital. i set it to dts and i get deafening silence. if i play negotiater and set it to "auto" then i get "dolby d" so everything is fine.
my dvd is set to bitstream. i have no clue as to what is going on.
any help w/b much appreciated.
