I've had great luck with my sony S300 and I think that for just under a grand you can get the top-of-the-line in the non-ES line (I'm not sure what iteration they are up to but it's the 7000 model (DVP-S7000, S-7700, and so on.Mine is four years old and has yet to even hiccup. I've been told that the newer models are not as overbuilt as the first generation ones were...for example mine plays CDRs and CDRWs, but the S-330 that replaced it doesn't. At the 7000 level, I believe you get the dual lasers..
