I believe that in acquiring a 'newer' AV receiver with multiple Video '"in's" will allow you to do what you want. Keep in mind that most of the time if you go into the receiver w/s-video or composite then you MUST go 'out' of the receiver the same way.

Hence, if you TV has both an s-video and a composite/component (whichever you need) hook them both up and use the AV receiver for the switcher. I'm currently using a Denon AVR5700 and have found no image degradation qualities that I've noticed. I'd recommend the Denon line to any AV enthusiast. I used to use a mid-line Yamaha but the overall "direct" music quality was not there for me. The Yamaha's have some excellent DSP simulations that the Denon can't touch, but I wanted more and cleaner power for music and movies.
