A Thorens tp90 is 17gm of mass. Is this heavy? With this mass, very few cartridges mate well with it.I have a van den Hul MC10. It is 7.3 grams and has a compliance of 20.
Using the formula of
F = 159 / square root ((M+m) x C)
F = resonance frequency in Hz
M = effective arm mass in gr
m = cartridge mass in gr
C = compliance in mm/NThe F of this set is 7.3 hz or so. Is is to to low?
The only cartridge that seems stiff enough is the Denon DL103 with a weight of 8.5 gram and a compliance of 5. This gives the result of about 14 hz for F.
The Dynavector DV-10X4 Mk II is 4.6 grams and has a compliance of 12. This gives a value for F of 9.8. This seems to be in the range of what is said to be good.
It seems to me that the TP90 arm mass voids using many of the cartridges.
Am I making to much of this?
