My Pioneer DV-414 needed to have the optical pickup assembly replaced under warranty in the first year, but it wasn't due to playing scratched discs or anything. It sounds like the engineering/build quality on your player is rather poor--this is not a surprise, since it is a Sony (I do own some Sony components myself and speak from experience).Todd
