Dumb question: What is macroblocking?

An inmate emailed me asking if I had experienced macroblocking with my Denon 5900. I'm not even sure what it is but if it's slight 'pixelation' in the very dark scenes, then yes I have seen that - But I wonder if that is 'macroblocking' or just a limitation and result of too much MPEG compression when the DVD was created. Thanks.
