PCM Digital stereo passed to surround reciever = horrid ringing

When I pass digital stereo (PCM) to my surround receiver it it's like I am suddenly in a small concrete room. There is a ringing sound that grates on my nerves, it's like extreme saturation or reverb of high frequency. I have tried applying different effects to the sound and can mask some of it but it is not listenable after about 15 min the noise just gets to me. The problem is worse with 'live' sound than studio sound.

There is no problem with any digital surround that is passed (e.g. 5.1 decoded in the receiver is just fantastic).

There is no problem with Dolby Digital 2.0.

My setup is a PC that contains the DVD player/TV Tuner passing digital on the S/PDIF connection to the receiver. Receiver is capable of all the common decoding routines and my speakers are 5.1. I have the same problem with the TV tuner sound (stereo which is digitized by the PC) as I have with digital stereo PCM from disk.

Am I doing something very wrong? Should I pass the stereo to the receiver only as analog?
