DVD -R and DVD +R compatibility

I've just purchased a Sony RDR-GX300 DVD Recorder. It will record and playback in both DVD -R and DVD +R recording formats (as well as a host of other formats). I'm trying to figure out which format to use in making recordings. Is there a rational way to explain which format will play back in which DVD players, DVD/CD transports, computer DVD drives, etc.? Or is this totally random? I've searched for some explanation of this issue and have not found anything helpful. Can anyone offer up some insight here, or, in the alternative, direct me to something written on the subject that might prove helpful?
