I recently set up an inexpensive A/V/gaming system for my son. He already had an HSU-STF2 subwoofer, and we were able to get the matching HSU Ventriloquist VT-12 satellite speaker system, which is similar in size and price to the Sony HTIB system you are looking at. Even though the Ventriloquists had their moments with certain limited well-recorded stereo material, they couldn't come close to the sound of my main HT system, when it came to surround playback. And my system consists of a mis-matched combination of audiophile stereo speakers and mid priced HT center and sides.

My suggestion to you is, first just buy a pair of higher quality speakers. Then later, when you can afford it, the matching center and sides. You can always run the receiver in different configurations, (phantom, 3-channel surround) until you get fully equipped.
