for the DVD-1910The Denon DVD-1910 is the least expensive current DVD player from Denon to include the DCDi line doubler. The unit comes with a basic remote control and is quite compact and lightweight. Those expecting the heavier build of the more expensive Denon players will need to look elsewhere. The video performance is reasonably good with no visually detectable chroma upsampling error (CUE) and fairly crisp images. The Sony NS-999ES has a noticably cleaner and better defined image on my Mitsubishi HD RPTV, but it has CUE and costs a good deal more. Potential users should be warned that some displays with internal scaling, most notably Panasonic plasma televisions, show severe macroblocking with the version of DCDi chip used in the DVD-1910. Ergonomics are acceptable given the cost of the player, although the front panel display is limited compared to some competitors and the disc transport is uninspiring. The sound quality is adequate for the task, but audiophiles probably won't be impressed. The Pioneer Elite DV-45A sounds smoother and more coherent than the Denon on CD and also offers SACD and DVD-Audio capabilities. The Sony NS-999ES is also more composed with a warmer and more accessible sound. The Benchmark DAC-1 beats all of these by a fairly wide margin. Overall, Denon has done a crebible job on the DVD-1910 and it deserves the attention of consumers looking for a good DVD player at a reasonable price.
Product Weakness: Basic remote and build quality. Product Strengths: Good value. DCDi line doubler.
