cambridge audio dvd-87 on short list

I want a universal player for less than $300, but is this one really better than the cheaper Pioneers and such? Does it convert SACD to PCM? I decided I want my Samsung dvd-recorder to just..uh..record..mainly because I don't like it's sound quality with DVD and I want SACD capability back.
