Stupid question about 'Wide Screen'

OK, I've got the HDTV - 16:9 format. - I'm not a big videophile. I figured now that I'd rent my DVDs they would all fill the screen.
Some of them I rent chop off the top and bottom of the movie. Is my TV set up wrong or what? - Can someone explain this to me?
