audio quality of NTSC vs ATSC

Hi there

Please share your comments on the audio quality of MTS audio from OTA NTSC versus the AC3 (Dolby Digital) from ATSC. I cannot trust my experience since I'm receiving the ATSC and decoding the audio using an HTPC, and I assume the onboard audio (Nvidia 6150 motherboard) has mediocre quality. Would sending the digital audio out via SPDIF to an outboard decoder be worth it for the ATSC source? For reference the MTS audio from an old Sony XBR TV (played through my 2-channel stereo sounds quite good. The decoded AC3 from the computer has poor dynamics. Is it the decoder/soundcard or the source?

Regards
