DVDs can accomodate more audio although they rarely do. The Classic Records HDADs and the older Chesky DADs were video DVDs with high-resolution audio. Similarly, you can get DualDiscs with more audio(resolution and/or channels) than possible on CD. Finally, take a look at what AIX does on the audio side of their discs.

Just because the bulk of DVDs has less audio is not an indication of the lack of its capabilities but of the lack of interest on the part of the manufacturer.
