The displays come from the factory with different settings (Brightness, Contrast, Color, etc) on each preset (Standard, Cinema, Vivid, etc). You can change each of the settings/parameters for each preset. For instance, use Cinema for low light/dark room watching. Calibrate the display in Cinema mode with the room dark. Turn the lights on or calibrate during the day in Vivid mode. When you watch with the room dark, choose the Cinema setting. When it's daytime or you have the lights on, choose the Vivid mode. The presets will act as "environmental compensators" and thus the display's calibration will be matched to the environment.If you have a consumer model, the settings are global. The Vivid preset will be the same setting on Input 1 as it is on Input 2. On the commercial model, the Vivid mode can be different from input to input.
I would also suggest Digital Video Essentials or, for the advanced user, the GetGray calibration disc. The THX "calibration" patterns are known to be off from disc to disc. The THX plan was never fully implemented and it's a goofy approach to calibration from get-go. It's a patch system instead of one that seeks to correct the problem at the source.
