HDMI is a signal format standard and has nothing to do with Hi Def capability. It simply provides the digital signal to your TV directly from the source and simplifies cabling because it carries both video and multichannel audio. That may or may not be good depending on the quality of your TV or HT receiver processors. Component video is typically very high quality.
