I dug deep in to the info on the diy screen forum at AVS. After several experiments I ended up with a 93" DIY screen, made of Home Depot paint products, that I'm very happy with:Behr Ultra Pure White, followed by a thin coat of Behr White Opal Pearlescent and a final coat of Behr Clear Matte water base polyurethane. This is applied over the white finish masonite they sell at Home Depot. I trimmed the edges with 1 x 3 covered with black velvet from JoAnn Fabrics.
Do look at the video on applying Screen Goo. The very careful, methodical application demonstrated there is critical for a even coat and it works well with the Behr paint too.
FWIW I use the screen with an Infocus SP4805 proj and, at the moment, a Toshiba SD-4990 player. I think the sp4805 is a steal for the (refurb) price, however the Toshiba is nice only when it feels like working (freezes or refuses to load 50% of the time). My room is a dedicated HT and very dark - black ceiling and front wall, gray sueded finish side and rear walls, and black out panels under black drapes on the windows. I find that the contrast and saturation in my HT is quite a bit better than at the movie theater that is a couple blocks down the street.
