HD DVD compatibility with older dvd players

I have been looking over this asylum and new to this video stuff. I have an old though very good sony dvd player. Are the hd dvd discs backward compatible with early dvd players. The disc in question is The Last of the Samurai. Thanks and my apologies if this has been clearly answered before. Norm
