Preamp question.

I have a current Panasonic 50" plasma and I'm about to get a Denon 3930ci universal player.
I have an early 90's Luxman preamp. A friend said that I need a preamp that handles optical inputs to fully utilize the new DVD/CD player. Is this correct?
