I've heard the newer Sharp Aquos are excellent. I'm looking at the high end 32" model myself, though it's a bit over your price range (retails for around $1,200) I haven't demoed the exact model I'm looking for, but I've seen the others in the Aquos line and they show a very good picture, even under the harsh lighting at Costco and Best Buy.
