Movie theatre presentation our standard ?

Is the movie theatre presentation of a film the standard against which we judge the HD presentation in our homes? I have just seen two films in movie the theatres: Casino Royal and Flags of our Father. Aside from the artistic value, the video quality is no better than my Sony XRB2 LCD.
Standard definition content on CRTs were no match for the movie theatre experience.
However, is there merit to the argument that wide screen high definition sets are now competitive with movie theatre presentations?
