Confused on Component Video

I just got into the HDTV game and have my first problem. I have two component video inputs on my TV. I find that one is interlaced only, the other is progressive/interlace. I want to use the progressive for my DVD player, which can do 480p. However, when I use that input, the video appears to be 'overloaded'. Colors are oversaturated and highlights are blown out. I have not found a way to adjust from either television or DVD player to bring the intensity in line.
I contacted the mfr. (Bangalore call center) and got the line that the progressive input is for HD cable boxes only. Is that possible?
I have an HD cable box coming and plan to try it to see if that source is good with 480/720p component.
The next step is to get an upconverting DVD player and plug in through the DVI port. If that is the solution for better DVD, then so be it. I paid $30 for the player. Not a huge loss.
