Yes, the hype is worth it, based on reports from perfect vision. The improvements are not subtle and break ground in many plasma problem areas. Black level and contrast ratio alone will make these the ones to watch. Power consumption and half life should be icing on the cake. I don't know exactly what the elite models will offer that isn't in the more economic models, but unless you plan to use speakers hooked up to the TV, I wouldn't worry about which flavor of HDMI you have on your plasma. Just don't buy one until you've checked out these babies. Any notions of Panasonic being in the same league as Pioneer are about to be trounced for the foreseeable future.
I've had a Pioneer 50 inch plasma for more than 5 yrs now. Like all older models it can only do 720P but I've been really impressed with Pioneer.
