If you only have a standard def TV, you have no motivation (and probably no money) to get a PS3. All the advantages of the PS3 are invisible in standard def, so you're only faced with the disadvantages (more expensive games and bad selection at the moment).
I do go to PS3 forums and I'd say 95% of the denizens have HDTV. The other 5% feel stupid they didn't put the money toward a good HDTV and are frustrated they can't view the high def content.
The ONLY reason to buy a PS3 is for blu-ray (both games and movies) and the ONLY way to see the advantages of blu-ray is with HDTV.
