If I had the PS3, I'd have to take a serious look at HDMI-capable preamp/processor. There might other reasons to upgrade pre/pros but I don't want HDMI to be the only reason to upgrade. 5.1 analog outputs from the source player works nicely for me; now if I could only get one with 5.1 SOTA DACs/decoders and true balanced outputs (except it would probably be hideously expensive).
