I appreciated Peter Tribeman's thoughts on setting up and doing a demo of one's home theater setup (November 2007 issue). I disagree, however, with his demo choices. What is the purpose of showing segments of lousy movies, to whet someone's appetite for the entire film? Maybe that's the reason he feels that guests' attention wanders after a short time.
My demos last 15- 20 minutes and I use afew of these, depending on the audience:
1. The Donald and Daisy Duck segment from "Fantasia 2000" in DTS.
2. The Jelly Roll Morton duel sequence from "The Legend of 1900"
in DTS.
3. "Hole in my Life" from the newly remastered Police "Synchronicity"
1986 Atlanta concert in DTS.
4. "The Birth of 5.1 Sound" and "Ghost Helicpoter Flyover from
"Apocalypse Now" (the new two disc box containing both versions).
5. The opening segment from "Master and Commander", currently
the best standard DVD sound available.
5. The opening segment to "The Living Daylights", by far the best Bond
film opening (alas, not so the rest of the picture). Also the DTS
logo on this one (or any of the new Bond DTS releases) will blow
you right outof your chair so be careful with sound levels).
Incidently, for music only enthusiasts I use the opening set from the new 3 CD box set of the complete 6/25/61 Bill Evans Trio Village Vanguard
recordings. The sound is here is incredible and I emailed the remastering engineer about it.
