Any fee-free stand-alone HD recorders?

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

I'm primarily looking to time-shift.

TiVo was very snotty to me, calling their monthly fee "a benefit".

I've been advised to look Avidly, as in the pointer below, but it doesn't seem to offer the necessity of timer recording.

What say, guys?
