1080I and 1080P are not the same. The 1080 I is "Interlace" which means alternating lines of video; or 540 actual scan lines of video data. 1080P is "Progressive" which means, in simple terms, there are no voids in the scan lines and therefore twice the video information of 1080I. Therefore 720P (Progressive)has more video information than 1080I, but less than 1080P, and will give you the better picture, IF, you are receiving a 720P signal from your source.
It is almost impossible to differentiate between a 1080P and 720P picture even on the best of TVs'. If you were to compare the signal on exactly the same set, even on a 60" Hi-Rez plasma, you would need to watch TV from less than 36" from the set. However long term observation of these formats on a 60" tv would of course eventually reduce your eyes to marshmallows and make your skin melt. Most TV manufactures don't recommend this.
