I have a 58-inch 720p plasma set with a very fine picture. Upconverted DVD with my Oppo 970HD player looks comparable to a lot of the HD material coming over satellite, but it is not as good as the top quality HD material coming over the satellite. That means it is very, very good. If I walked into the room with an upconverted DVD playing, I probably would have to look at it for a bit to be sure it wasn't some random HD broadcast. I would know immediately it wasn't the highest quality HD, which is simply stunning. It is far better than standard DVD.
To put it another way, I find upconverted DVD good enough that it considerably weakens any drive to buy a HD player of some kind. Oppos are so cheap and seem to do such a good job that I think it's hard to go wrong. I think they have something like a 30-day return policy if you don't like it.
Hope this helps.
Joe
