The Nielsen numbers look at a larger part of the big picture by including most of the Internet sights and the major retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc).
The biggest "gap" in the Nielsen numbers is lack of data from Wal-Mart sales, which retailer is loath to share sales data with anyone. The studios know how well sales are going but they tend to be tight-lipped too.
