DVD player audio through Coaxial S/PDIF

I am restricted to Coaxial S/PDIF connection as I have a Linn AV5103 preamp that I use for vinyl and cd stereo listening primarily.
I want to upgrade to an HDDVD player but want to maximize audio while staying with the Linn preamp.

The Toshiba HD-XA2 has been recommended but to quote a review

"The HD-XA2 takes a slightly different tack. Instead of transcoding to DTS, it converts the signal to Dolby Digital 5.1 at that format's maximum bit rate of 640 kb/s. This is arguably inferior to the DTS method (Dolby advocates would disagree), but ensures greater backwards compatibility.
