My understanding is that the LFE is only active with AC-3 and is always output to the sub output only. Most processors use the same output as the sub out for music and the LFE out for AC-3; what is passed depends on the speaker settings and the source selected. It wouldn't surprise me to find other setup schemes, however. According to the instructions with my processor, if there is no sub selected the LFE is routed to the center and not the mains. Seems a poor idea to me, but I don't have to worry about it in my application.
